BET will give a salute to Lionel Richie at this summer's BET Awards.  At the June 29th awards ceremony, the singer will be honored with the 2014 BET Lifetime Achievement Award.

Richie will also take the stage to perform.  He says he's "extremely honored" to be recognized by BET.  He's also "so proud" to be included in the "extraordinary" list of Lifetime Achievement Award recipients, which includes Whitney Houston, James Brown, Diana Ross and Charlie Wilson.

Hosted by comedian Chris Rock, this year's BET Awards will take place at Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre L.A. Live.  BET will air the awards ceremony live at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.

Among the top nominees going into the 2014 BET Awards are Jay Z, Beyoncé and Drake.  The three are tied for the most nominations with five nods a piece.  BET will also recognize film and sports.  Forest Whitaker, Idris Elba and Lupita Nyong'o are among the acting nominees, while LeBron James, Blake Griffin and Venus and Serena Williams are nominated in the sports categories.
